Water Pressure Calculator (PSI)
Do I need an expansion tank with a PRV?
If a PRV, check valve, or backflow preventer creates a closed system, an expansion tank is typically required to absorb thermal expansion from the water heater. Without it, pressure can spike on every heating cycle and force nuisance discharge at the T&P relief valve. Expansion tank sizing depends on heater volume and incoming pressure.
