Use the actual conductor area from Chapter 9 (Table 5 for insulated, Table 8 for bare) — the ground is not exempt, even though it is not a current-carrying conductor for derating purposes.

What if my conduit fill is over 40 percent?

If the calculated fill exceeds the allowable Table 1 percentage for your conductor count, the raceway is overfilled and you need fewer conductors or a larger trade size.
