Should I round HVAC tonnage up or down?

For this educational estimate, favor the lower standard size to reduce short-cycling and poor dehumidification. Final equipment selection must still account for design conditions and matched-system performance through Manual J and Manual S.

Is this calculator a replacement for Manual J or Manual S?

No. It organizes existing heating and cooling load estimates into equipment-capacity bands. Manual J determines the building load, while Manual S verifies that specific matched equipment delivers the required capacity at the project design conditions.

Why does the calculator stop at 5 tons?

Loads above 5 tons often indicate a large, multi-zone, or light-commercial project. Those systems need project-specific load calculations, zoning decisions, and electrical coordination from a qualified HVAC professional.
