Pipe Weight Calculator (lb/ft)

Estimate steel pipe dead load from outside diameter, wall thickness, and total run length.

  1. Enter pipe dimensions Type outside diameter and wall thickness in inches based on schedule/spec data.
  2. Enter total run length Input total pipe length in feet for the assembly or run being estimated.
  3. Calculate weight Press Calculate to get pounds per foot and total estimated weight.

How is steel pipe weight per foot calculated?

A common fabrication estimate is W(lb/ft) = 10.69 × (OD − WT) × WT, where OD is outside diameter in inches and WT is wall thickness in inches. Multiply the per-foot value by total length to estimate run weight.

Does this include fittings and water weight?

No. The estimate is pipe body only. Rigging and support design must add fittings, valves, hangers, insulation, and fluid weight (plus contingencies) for realistic loads.

Can I use this for non-steel pipe?

Not directly. The constant used in this equation is for carbon-steel density assumptions. Stainless, copper, and plastic piping require different density-based formulas or manufacturer weight tables.
