    Drain Field

Also called leach field or absorption field. A network of perforated pipes buried in trenches filled with gravel that distributes treated effluent from the septic tank into the soil for final filtration and disposal. Requires proper soil percolation (ability to absorb water). Typical depth: 18-36 inches below surface. Size depends on soil type, household size, and local regulations. The soil acts as a natural filter, removing remaining contaminants before water reaches groundwater.
