Pressure Tank
A storage tank that maintains water pressure in well systems by storing pressurized water. Prevents frequent pump cycling, extends pump life, and provides consistent water pressure. Typical sizes: 20-120 gallons for residential use. Pre-charge pressure: 2 PSI below pump cut-in pressure (typically 38 PSI for 40/60 PSI system). Bladder tanks use an air-filled bladder, while diaphragm tanks use a flexible membrane.
Common symptoms
- Frequent pump cycling
- Waterlogged tank
- Low pressure
- Tank leaking
Common repairs
- Air charge adjustment
- Bladder replacement
- Tank replacement
- Pressure switch adjustment
Safety note
Tank is under pressure. Shut off pump and drain before servicing. Check pre-charge with pump off.
