    Scope

Fix common shower problems including low water pressure, dripping handles, and temperature swings by cleaning the head and replacing worn cartridges or seals.

    Safety

    Read before starting

Turn off water supply to shower (isolating valve or main) before opening valve or cartridge. Note hot water — avoid scalding when testing. Protect finishes from tools; take photos before disassembly.

    Steps

    01

    Diagnose the Problem

    • Test whether low pressure affects hot, cold, or both; check other fixtures for comparison
    • Look for drips or spray from handle, trim, or behind escutcheon when off
    • Test temperature stability: does it drift or suddenly go hot/cold?
    • Remove showerhead and run water from arm — if pressure is good, problem is showerhead (clean or replace)
    02

Shut Off Water and Remove Handle and Trim

    • Turn off supply (isolating valve under sink or at main)
    • Remove handle: look for set screw under cap or behind handle; pull handle off
    • Remove escutcheon/trim plate (may be held by screws or need to be pulled after handle is off)
    • Take photos of cartridge orientation and parts before going further
    03

Inspect and Replace Cartridge (if needed)

    • Remove retaining clip or nut that holds cartridge; pull cartridge straight out
    • If stuck, use manufacturer cartridge puller or gentle twisting; do not use excessive force
    • Install new cartridge in same orientation (hot/cold and limit stop); ensure fully seated
    • Reinstall retaining clip or nut; turn water on briefly to flush debris before reassembling trim
    04

    Replace Seals and Reassemble Trim

    • Replace O-rings or gaskets on valve body or behind trim if kit includes them
    • Reinstall escutcheon and handle; align correctly with cartridge stem
    • Tighten handle screw; do not overtighten
    05

    Turn On and Test

    • Turn water supply back on slowly
    • Test hot and cold balance; check for drips at handle and trim
    • If anti-scald limit stop is present, adjust per manufacturer (often a set screw or ring behind handle)
    • Reinstall showerhead; confirm pressure and temperature are acceptable
