    Scope

Replace your central HVAC air filter and pick the right MERV rating for residential blowers to improve air quality without choking off system airflow.

    Safety

    Read before starting

Turn the system off at the thermostat before removing the filter so dust and loose insulation are not pulled into the blower. Filters are clean work — no PPE beyond a dust mask for sensitive users.

    Steps

    01

    Turn Off the System

    • Set the thermostat to Off — not just changing mode, fully off
    • Wait 30 seconds for the blower-off delay to complete
    • This prevents loose debris from being sucked into the blower wheel during the swap
    02

Locate and Remove the Old Filter

    • Return grille (ceiling or wall): release the spring clips or flip latches, swing the grille down, slide the filter out
    • Furnace / air-handler cabinet: open the filter access panel (often just a sliding cover or single screw)
    • Note which side of the filter faced the return air (will be dirty) — the arrow points toward the blower / supply side
    • Bag the old filter immediately if it's loaded with dust
    03

Inspect the Filter Slot and Frame

    • Check for gaps around the filter frame — air that bypasses the filter ruins all the work
    • Look for crushed gasket or missing foam tape; replace if compressed
    • Wipe the slot with a damp microfiber cloth — do not blow dust further into the duct
    • If you see standing water in the slot, stop and investigate — that's a separate diagnostic
    04

    Install the New Filter

    • Match the airflow arrow on the new filter to the direction air flows (toward the blower / furnace / air handler)
    • Slide the filter in until it seats flat against the back wall of the slot
    • Confirm the filter does not flex or bow — bowing means it's too thin for the slot
    • Close the access panel; ensure spring clips re-engage fully
    05

    Restart and Verify

    • Switch the thermostat back to Auto and the appropriate mode (Heat/Cool)
    • Listen for a normal blower start without whistling — whistling means filter restriction is too high
    • Hold a tissue near a return grille — it should pull onto the grille firmly but not violently
    • Write the install date on the new filter's frame with a marker
    06

    Set a Replacement Schedule

    • 1-inch fiberglass: every 30 days
    • 1-inch pleated MERV 8–11: every 60–90 days
    • 4–5 inch pleated MERV 11–13: every 6–12 months
    • Cut intervals in half if you have pets, recent construction nearby, or high outdoor pollen
