    Scope

    Install or replace a 1/2 to 3/4 HP garbage disposal, mounting it to the sink flange and connecting the drain, dishwasher line, and power supply safely.

    Shut off breaker and verify power is off; follow manufacturer instructions and local code.

    Steps

    01

    Safe Shutdown & Prep

    • Turn OFF switch and breaker
    • Verify power is off with tester
    • Bucket and towels under trap
    Continue Gate:Power off, area prepped?
    02

    Remove Existing Parts

    • Loosen slip nuts and drain trap
    • Support old unit, unlock, disconnect wiring
    • Remove basket strainer and clean rim
    Continue Gate:Opening clean, parts removed?

    Install Sink Flange & Mount

    • Roll putty and seat flange
    • From below: gasket, backup ring, mounting ring
    • Tighten evenly; wipe excess
    Continue Gate:Flange flush and secure?

    Wire the Disposal

    • Corded: install cord with strain relief; green→ground, white→neutral, black→hot
    • Hardwire: route cable, splice in junction box, secure cover
    Code notes
    • NEC 2023 §210.8(D): kitchen-area receptacles serving countertop / dishwasher / disposal generally require GFCI protection. Many AHJs require a dedicated branch circuit for the disposal — confirm locally.

    Prep Discharge & Dishwasher Inlet

    • Attach discharge elbow with gasket/screws
    • Knock out DW inlet plug and remove slug
    Continue Gate:Elbow tight; DW inlet prepped?

    Hang and Lock Unit

    • Lift, align tabs, twist to mount
    • Lock fully with wrench
    Continue Gate:Locked, no rocking?
    07

    Connect Drains

    • Dry-fit outlet to trap
    • Use slip-joint washers (taper to flare)
    • Tighten hand-tight + 1/4 turn
    • DW hose: air gap → disposal (or high loop)
    Continue Gate:All joints snug; one P-trap only?

    Leak Test

    • Fill sink halfway; release; inspect joints
    • Correct washer orientation if leaks
    Continue Gate:No leaks?

    Power & Operation Test

    • Restore breaker
    • Run cold water; flip switch
    • Test with ice; listen for smooth grinding
    • Use hex key + reset if jammed
    Continue Gate:Smooth, no vibration; drains well?

    Finalize & Educate

    • Re-check fasteners
    • Coil cord neatly
    • Review reset, safe use (no grease/bones/fibrous waste)
