Safety
Read before starting
Obtain permits before rough-in where required. Call for utility locates before drilling or cutting. Follow local code for pipe sizing, slope, and venting. Turn off main water when tying in supply; support pipe every 4–6 ft.

Steps
Plan Layout and Code Check
- Plan washer and optional utility sink locations; confirm rough-in dimensions
- Verify code: standpipe height (e.g. 30–48 in above trap), 2 in drain, slope ¼ in per foot, vent within required distance of trap
- Plan supply: ½ in typical for washer; individual shutoffs for washer and sink
- Mark routes; call for utility locates before drilling into walls or floor
Run Supply Lines
- Shut off main water; tee into existing cold and hot supply (or run new lines)
- Run ½ in supply to laundry; install shutoff valves and washer box (or stub-outs)
- Support pipe every 4–6 ft; use appropriate hangers
- If adding utility sink, run separate hot/cold to sink location with shutoffs
Install Drain and Vent
- Install drain line with ¼ in per foot slope to main drain or branch
- Install standpipe (e.g. 30–48 in above trap per code); use 2 in pipe; secure with straps
- Install P-trap and tie standpipe to drain line; vent within code distance of trap (or tie into existing vent)
- Cap stub-outs until fixtures are installed; ensure no open drain/vent during construction
Inspection and Testing
- Schedule rough-in inspection if required by jurisdiction
- Turn water on; test all connections for leaks
- Pour water into standpipe to verify trap and drain flow
- Document layout and cap heights for future fixture installation
