    Scope

Diagnose and fix no hot water on a gas or electric tank heater: check the pilot, thermostat, heating elements, and dip tube to restore a hot water supply.

    Safety

    Read before starting

Turn off power/gas before opening panels; verify no gas leaks; use a multimeter safely.

    Steps

    01

    Quick Checks

    • Verify breaker ON (electric) or gas valve ON (gas)
    • Thermostat set appropriately (120°F typical)
    • Wait recovery time if heavy recent usage

    02

    Electric: Element/Thermostat

    • Turn power OFF at breaker and verify at terminals with a multimeter before touching wires
    • Close cold inlet and drain tank to below the element being serviced (upper first, then lower if needed)
    • Remove access panels and insulation; take a photo of wire placement before disconnecting anything
    • Check and reset high-limit (ECO) button, then retest operation if it was tripped
    • Test each element for continuity and check for short-to-ground if breaker is tripping
    • If an element is open/shorted: disconnect wires, remove with element wrench, install new element with new gasket, and tighten per manufacturer instructions
    • Inspect thermostats for burned contacts or failed switching; replace with matching part and reconnect wires to original terminals
    • Reinstall insulation/panels, refill tank fully, purge air at a hot faucet, then restore breaker power

    03

    Gas: Ignition & Pilot

    • Set gas to PILOT/IGNITE per manual
    • Verify pilot/ignition sequence; observe flame
    • If pilot will not stay lit, remove thermocouple/flame sensor, clean tip with emery cloth, or replace with matching part
    • Reinstall sensor, relight per manufacturer steps, and confirm pilot remains stable

    04

    Gas: Venting & Combustion Air

    • Ensure vent not blocked and has proper slope
    • Confirm adequate combustion air openings
    Continue Gate:Stable flame; no backdrafting?
    05

    Water Supply & Mixing

    • Verify cold inlet valve fully open
    • Check hot outlet and any mixing/tempering valve for restriction
    • Inspect dip tube for failure (lukewarm, short draw)
    Continue Gate:Valves/dip tube OK?
    06

    Sediment & Maintenance

    • If rumbling or poor recovery, perform sediment flush
    • Check anode condition (long-term)
Continue Gate:System clear and flushing complete?
    07

    Restore & Test

    • Restore power/gas and relight per manual
    • Monitor recovery and temperature at fixtures
    • Recheck for leaks and proper operation
