    At what temperature does a heat pump stop working?

    Standard air-source heat pumps keep producing usable heat into the teens, but their capacity and efficiency drop as it gets colder, and most need auxiliary heat below their balance point. Cold-climate (variable-speed) heat pumps maintain strong output to 0°F or below. The "stop" point is really where backup heat takes over, set by the balance point — not a hard cutoff.
