    Ton (Cooling)

Unit of cooling capacity equal to 12,000 BTU per hour. One ton approximates the heat absorbed by melting one ton of ice in 24 hours. Residential systems typically range from 1.5 to 5 tons. Sizing should follow Manual J load calculation, not rule-of-thumb.
