What does structural welding mean for fire-protection work and which AWS code applies?

AWS D1.1 governs welded steel pipe spools, hanger assemblies, fire-pump skids, and apparatus chassis. D1.5 covers bridge steel and almost never applies on fire jobs. Welders working on listed sprinkler piping also follow NFPA 13 weld qualifications — beveled root, full penetration, no slag inside the bore — and most AHJs want a WPS and welder cert on file before the spool ships from the shop.
