    Single-Mode vs Multimode Fiber

Single-mode fiber (9 µm core) carries one light path for long-distance, high-bandwidth links; multimode (50/62.5 µm core) carries many paths over shorter distances at lower cost. Connectors and optics are not interchangeable.

    Common uses

    Campus/backbone (single-mode) vs in-building (multimode)
